Size your load first — we'll match generator classes to your recommended wattage below, plus the popular classes side by side.

Off-grid or battery setups need an inverter, not a generator. Size it by load type — motors and compressors pull multiples of their running draw at startup.

Transfer switches are licensed-electrician work — code prohibits back-feeding, and an ATS install needs permits. Need a pro to install it? This slot is reserved for a vetted local generator installer.

Everything above 5,000 W, any transfer-switch connection to household circuits, and all commercial standby work is licensed-electrician territory — permits, code, and the inspection log matter as much as the genset. How generator sizing works

Three numbers decide what you buy. Running watts — the sum of everything switched on at the same time. Starting watts — the 2–4× spike when a motor kicks on; only the largest one counts at any instant, because motors don't all start together. Headroom — generators hate running flat-out; at 100% load they run hot, loud, and short-lived, and fuel burn climbs faster than output. The 20% margin keeps you in the efficient zone and leaves room for the appliance you forgot.

Frequently asked questions

What size generator do I need to run a house?

For essentials only (fridge, freezer, well pump, furnace fan, lights, phone charging), a 5,000–7,500 watt portable generator covers it. To also run central AC or an electric water heater, step up to 10,000–12,000 watts. Add the running watts of everything you'll power at once, add the extra surge of the largest motor load, then buy about 20% above that total.

How do starting watts differ from running watts?

Running watts are what an appliance draws continuously. Starting (surge) watts are the brief spike when a motor starts — typically 2–3× running watts for pumps and fans, up to 4× for compressors. Your generator's surge rating must cover the biggest starting load on top of everything else already running.

How long will a generator run on a tank of gas?

At 50% load, most portable generators burn roughly 1 gallon of gasoline per 7,000 watts of rated output per hour — a 3,500 W inverter generator goes about 5 hours per gallon, and a 7,500 W model about 1.4 hours per gallon. Propane gives roughly 25% less runtime per gallon-equivalent but stores indefinitely.

Do I need a transfer switch to run a generator?

Yes, if you're connecting to household circuits. Code requires a manual or automatic transfer switch — back-feeding through a dryer outlet is illegal and can kill utility workers. A 30 A manual switch handles 7,200 W; a 50 A switch handles 12,000 W.

Why does the calculator add 20% headroom?

The 20% buffer covers two things the wattage list can't predict: measured loads running above their nameplate rating, and future appliances you'll add later. It is headroom on the generator, not permission to exceed its rating — sustained overload still trips the breaker or stalls the engine.
