Medians in a same-day 43-listing spot-check of Amazon.com (September 12, 2026) range from $329 in the 2,000–2,500 W inverter class to $1,159 in the 8,000–12,500 W class — a 3.5× step from camping-quiet to whole-home-backup territory.
| Wattage class | Listings | Median price | Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2,000–2,500 W (inverter) | 11 | $329.39 | $220.31 – $599.00 |
| 3,500–5,000 W | 11 | $549.99 | $309.99 – $988.00 |
| 5,000–7,000 W | 9 | $799.99 | $579.00 – $4,999.00 |
| 8,000–12,500 W | 12 | $1,159.00 | $849.00 – $1,370.00 |
Method: live Amazon.com search-result scrape (brand and generic queries: Champion, WEN, Generac, "portable generator 7000 watt", "portable generator 2000 watt inverter"), prices as listed September 12, 2026. Prices fluctuate; verify any single model at the linked source.
| Model (class) | Price | Watts per $1,000 |
|---|---|---|
| WEN DF475T 4,750 W dual-fuel | $464.99 | 10,215 |
| WEN DF8000X 8,000 W dual-fuel | $623.17 | 12,837 |
| DuroStar DS13000MX 13,000 W dual-fuel | $899.00 | 14,460 |
| Generac 8,125 W gas (GP-class) | $879.00 | 9,242 |
| Westinghouse WGen12500DF 12,500 W dual-fuel | $999.00 | 12,512 |
| Champion 12,500 W tri-fuel | $1,259.99 | 9,921 |
| Honda EU7000iS 7,000 W inverter | $4,999.00 | 1,400 |
The open-frame dual-fuel class is the watts-per-dollar king: the DuroStar 13,000 W at $899 delivers 14.5 watts per dollar, ten times the Honda EU7000iS inverter's 1.4 W/$. You are paying the inverter premium for clean sine-wave power and 52–60 dB quiet, not for watts.
At the September 2026 EIA national gasoline average of $4.295/gal (week ending September 7, 2026), a typical 7,500 W portable at 50% load — the load that covers a fridge, freezer, well pump, lights, and electronics — costs $13–19 per 5-hour evening outage and $62–93 per 24 hours, at manufacturer fuel-consumption specs of 0.6–0.9 gal/hr for that class.
The math, so you can redo it with your own numbers: (gallons per hour) × (EIA $/gal) × (hours). We use 0.6 / 0.75 / 0.9 gal/hr as the published spec range for 7,500 W-class portables at 50% load; EIA weekly U.S. retail gasoline $4.295 (Sept 7, 2026). Cross-check any model's spec sheet against our generator sizing calculator, which computes the same figure per load.
Propane prices differently: EIA's residential propane series last reported $2.674/gal (week of March 30, 2026; the series publishes only during heating season, October–March). At the 1.3×-volume de-rate dual-fuel generators suffer on propane (published manufacturer specs; DOE energy content 91,600 vs 125,000 BTU/gal), that's $10–17 per 5-hour outage — cheaper per hour than gasoline at current prices, and storable indefinitely, which is why dual-fuel exists.
Yes — by 3.8–5.6×. Generator-delivered electricity costs $0.69–1.03/kWh at September 2026 prices; the EIA U.S. residential electricity average was 18.34¢/kWh in June 2026 and 17.30¢/kWh for full-year 2025. And grid prices keep climbing: EIA's annual residential averages went 15.04¢ (2022) → 16.00¢ (2023) → 16.48¢ (2024) → 17.30¢ (2025).
That multiple is the honest way to frame the generator-vs-battery decision: fuel is a rent you pay per outage hour, forever. A battery bank sizer shows the capex alternative — and for context, EnergySage's 21st Marketplace Report (H1 2025) put home solar+battery at a record-low median $2.48/W, i.e. $29,016 before incentives for the median 11.7 kW quoted system.
Three hurricanes did it: EIA's Electric Power Annual 2024 reports U.S. customers averaged 11 hours of interruptions in 2024, nearly twice the prior decade's annual average, with Hurricanes Beryl, Helene, and Milton accounting for 80% of all hours without electricity. When comparing years, EIA attributes most differences to major events — which is exactly the tail risk a generator (or battery) is priced against.
Carbon monoxide, not fire or shock, is the killer: generator-related CO deaths averaged 85 per year in the most recent complete CPSC data (2017–2019), the record year was 103 deaths in 2005, and CPSC field staff investigated 1,332 generator CO deaths in total. CPSC's proposed safety standard estimates it would prevent 2,148 deaths over 30 years (about 72 per year) — over $1 billion a year in avoided deaths and injuries, or roughly $273 of benefit per generator sold.

Generator fuel economics move with the EIA weekly series (U.S. retail gasoline, all formulations, weekly since the early 1990s):
| Period (EIA weekly series) | U.S. avg $/gal | What was happening |
|---|---|---|
| Annual 2022 | 4.059 | Peak week $5.107 (June 13, 2022) — record high |
| Annual 2023 | 3.635 | Post-spike normalization |
| Annual 2024 | 3.424 | Helene/Milton outage season ran on cheaper fuel |
| Annual 2025 | 3.224 | Lowest annual average since 2021 |
| 2026 weeks so far | 2.907 – 4.628 | Latest week: $4.295 (Sept 7, 2026) |
Historical hurricane-week ranges from the same series: 2005 (Katrina/Rita year) $1.82–$3.12; 2012 (Sandy year) $3.32–$4.00; 2017 (Harvey/Irma/Maria) $2.38–$2.80; 2022 (Ian) $3.20–$5.11.
Only if natural gas is your plan: tri-fuel portables listed at a $1,249 median vs $902 for dual-fuel (gas+propane) in matched listings — a 38% premium for the NG hose and fitting. Gasoline-only remains cheapest to buy but worst to store (3–12 months with stabilizer per manufacturer guidance), propane stores indefinitely, and a natural-gas hookup is the only fuel that never goes stale in your garage.
Answers above in the FAQ schema cover the six most-cited questions (prices by class, fuel per outage, generator-vs-grid cost, 2024 outage duration, CO deaths, record gasoline price). Each is sourced in the list below.
