Diesel standby generator

A diesel set can carry a standby kilowatt rating. This site's fuel line is still a gasoline portable rule. Those are not interchangeable.

Quick answer: EIA lists diesel fuel at 137,381 Btu per gallon, motor gasoline at 120,214, and propane at 91,452. The calculator's gasoline rate is recommended watts ÷ 7,000. Do not feed a diesel nameplate into that division and call the result diesel burn.

What "standby" means on a diesel set

Manufacturers publish a standby output and a prime output. They are not the same number. On Kubota's GL7000-USA sheet the standby output is 7.0 kW and the prime output is 6.5 kW. That model is worked on its own page, Kubota standby generator, because the fuel table belongs to that sheet. This page is about the mistake of mixing fuels.

EIA's sample heat contents put more Btu in a gallon of diesel (137,381) than in a gallon of gasoline (120,214) or propane (91,452). Heat content is not a generator's gallons-per-hour. A diesel engine's published burn comes from the manufacturer's load test, not from dividing watts by 7,000.

Worked example: fridge and a 1/3 hp furnace fan

Honda lists an Energy Star refrigerator or freezer at 1,200 starting watts and 132–192 running watts, and a 1/3 horsepower gas or fuel-oil furnace fan at 1,400 starting watts and 700 running watts, marked 240 V. This case uses 192 W for the fridge.

A 7.0 kW diesel standby rating is a larger machine than this 2,000 W portable recommendation. The 14.0 hours is gasoline math for the portable class. It is not how long the Kubota tank lasts, and it is not a diesel gallon.

A common mistake

Taking EIA's 137,381 / 120,214 ratio (about 1.14) and multiplying the calculator's 0.286 gal/h by that ratio, or dividing by it, to "convert" the answer into diesel. EIA published heat per gallon. The calculator published a gasoline portable rule of thumb. A diesel burn rate has to come from the generator sheet's own load rows. Half-load on the GL7000 sheet is 0.45 gal/h of diesel, which is a test of that machine, not of an 892 W house load.

Limits, and when to call a pro

Installing a standby set, a day tank, or an automatic transfer switch is permanent work. It takes a licensed electrician and a permit where local code requires one. Stored diesel and a residential setback are not things this calculator decides. For a service contract and load-bank testing, start with finding a commercial generator service. For portable versus automatic home standby in general, see portable vs standby.

Run any engine-driven set outdoors. The placement rules are on how to run a generator safely.
